SEO & local search

Found first.

Somebody within ten miles of you is typing what you do into Google right now. The only question is whose name comes back. Structure, local search and Google Business — built in from day one, not sold to you a year later as a rescue job.

Straight answer first

Most SEO sold to small businesses is theatre.

A monthly invoice, a report full of graphs, and no more phone calls than last year. The work that actually moves a local business is unglamorous and largely finite: pages that match what people type, a properly set up Google Business Profile, real reviews, a site that loads fast and works on a phone, and information that is consistent everywhere it appears.

Do those things and you compete. Skip them and no amount of monthly retainer will save you.

01

A page per thing you sell

One page trying to rank for six services ranks for none. Each service gets its own page, saying that thing plainly.

02

The words people type

Not industry language. Real searches — the ones with a town in them and an intention behind them.

03

Technical groundwork

Headings, meta, canonicals, sitemap, robots, structured data. Invisible, and the reason anything else works.

04

Google Business Profile

Set up properly as a service-area business, with the categories, service areas and details that decide who appears in the map.

05

Speed

A slow site loses people before it loses rankings. Performance is measured on the live URL, not promised.

06

Reviews

The strongest local signal there is, and the one most businesses never ask for. A simple routine for getting them, honestly.

Where it applies

Local first, then wider.

Nobody searches "North West". They search Blackpool, Preston, Lytham, St Annes, Kirkham, Southport — with a trade in front of it. Local search is won town by town and service by service, which is why the groundwork is structural rather than a monthly fiddle.

Work beyond the region follows a different route entirely: it comes through referrals, platforms and non-geographic searches rather than the map. If that is where your customers are, the plan should say so honestly instead of pretending local tactics will reach them.

Honesty

What you will not be told here.

  • That number one is guaranteed. Google does not sell positions and does not take instructions.
  • That results arrive in a fortnight. For a new site, two to three months to a real local position is realistic.
  • That you need a blog post every week. A few pages that answer real questions beat a pile nobody reads.
  • That the work is a permanent monthly fee. The heavy lifting is largely one-off; what continues is small, and you will be told which is which.

Common questions

The things people ask first.

How long does SEO take to work?

For a local business with a Google Business Profile and pages that match what people search, expect movement in weeks and a real position in two to three months. Competitive city terms take longer. Anyone promising page one in a fortnight is guessing.

Can you guarantee I will rank number one?

No, and nobody honest can. Google does not sell positions and does not take instructions. What can be guaranteed is that the work is done properly and that you can see exactly what changed and what it did.

Is Google Business Profile really that important?

For a local service business it is often more important than the website. The map results sit above everything else for near me searches, and a profile with real reviews will beat a better website without one.

Do I need to blog every week?

No. A handful of pages that answer what people actually search for beats a pile of filler nobody reads. If writing is not your thing, it is better to skip it than to publish for the sake of it.

What if my site was built by someone else?

That is fine. The groundwork can be done on an existing site. If the site is the thing holding you back, that will be said plainly rather than quietly billed around.
